The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 by
participants in the suffragette movement who believed that
victory in the voting rights battle was only a step toward a
greater challenge. Said founder Carrie Chapman Catt: "Winning
the vote is only an opening wedge -- learning to use it is a
bigger task."
The League is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages
the informed and active participation of citizens in government and
influences public policy through education and advocacy. It is a unique
activist network that derives its strength from the energy and
commitment of more than a hundred thousand members and supporters
organized in 1,250 local leagues nationwide.
The Alexandria League of Women Voters, founded in 1947, has some 200
members. Any citizen, 18 years of age or older, who lives in Alexandria
may join. In addition, associate memberships are available for younger
people and non-citizens.
Our focus on the issues and on encouraging true government of the
people has earned the League of Women Voters its reputation as one of
America's most respected political institutions. In an era of
proliferating and powerful special interests, the League's advocacy of
the public interest is increasingly recognized as an essential voice of
democracy.
The Alexandria League of Women Voters is active from September
through May of each year. We invite you to read through these pages to
learn more about what we do and what we stand for. And, if your goals
match our goals, we invite you to join us in achieving them.
