Who We Are
The League of Women Voters has a rich history that predates women's suffrage.
It was founded in 1920 by participants in the Suffragette Movement who
believed that victory in the voting rights battle was only a step toward
a greater challenge. "Winning the vote is only an opening wedge," said
founder Carrie Chapman Catt, noting that: "...learning to use it is a
bigger task."
The Alexandria League of Women Voters, founded in 1947, is one of 1,250
local leagues organized in communities from coast to coast. It has approximately
200 members. Any citizen, 18 years of age or older, who lives in Alexandria
may join. In addition, associate memberships are available for younger
people and non-citizens.
The League is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages
the informed and active participation of citizens in government and
influences public policy through education and advocacy. It is a unique
activist network that derives its strength from the energy and commitment
of more than a hundred thousand members and supporters nationwide.
Like its parent organization, the Alexandria League of Women Voters
is nonpartisan, never supporting or opposing candidates or political
parties. It is, however, political in that it does act on issues after
thorough study and member agreement.
